If you want coffee that is cheap, easy and programmable 24 hours in advance, get the Mr. Coffee. If you want coffee that is much better tasting in my option get a Bialetti Brikka Stovetop Percolator. It is one of those things that everyone should have. My brother gave me one when I was in high school. I still have it and it still brews great coffee. Sometimes I pull it out and brew a cup.

Bialetti Brikka 4-Cup Stovetop Percolator

The Bialetti Brikka is not cheap. If you love coffee you need to have one because it is a classic that still makes great rocket fuel. The aluminum, stovetop espresso maker produces 4 cups of frothy, creamy, rich, authentic Italian espresso in just 4-5 minutes. Unique octagon shape. Aluminum Coffee Maker And Filter. Dual-chamber design and pressurizing process for fast brewing.  The Brikka was redesigned with an opening in the lid to allow air circulation into the valve which creates the perfect layer of foam at the top of your cup.

I grew up with a Bialetti Brikka stovetop percolator.  The percolator gets hot, so be careful. People say that the coffeemaker does not make true espresso. Many more people say they don’t care because it makes a great cup of coffee. I add water and half and half to mine so by the time I am done it is not espresso anyway.

Here are some of the typical problems you’ll encounter with cheaper coffee machines:

1. Spillage
This is among the most typical issues people run across with their coffee machines. Occasionally, the spout is poorly designed in such a way that the coffee spills all over the bench or on the table when you are trying to pour a cup. With small spouts, like the ones in most 4 cup coffee makers, the only thing you can do to avoid spillage is to simply pour more slowly and carefully. If you think you can’t avoid spills, then pour a cup in your sink.

2. Moisture
There are also times when the coffee basket retains so much moisture which results in moisture dripping on the hot plate after the is removed. can be annoying since this means extra cleaning. You just want to drink a great cup of coffee not clean up another mess.

3. Delay brew function
A bunch of the lower-quality four cup coffee makers have delay brew feature that you can set up hours before your drinking time. The delay clock is often the first thing to break on the cheaper models.

4. Ruggedness
Since they are less expensive coffee makers are just not constructedfor serious everyday use. So if you think you will be using the brewer more than once a day, you really need to invest in a larger and better model. You can also opt to add smaller amount of water, which helps solve your problems with the quality of the coffee.

5. Cups of brewed coffee
You must also be aware that the cup sizes stated by the manufacturers are sometimes smaller than the average cup of coffee. So don’t expect that a 4-cup coffee maker will really make the amount its name implies.

If you want something simple that will not give your coffee the taste of paper or plastic then try the Bodum Chambord.

Bodum Chambord 4 cup French Press Coffee Maker

Thanks to the increasing need for better coffee, the French press coffeemaker has become one of the most popular in the world. Yet the design has not strayed a bit from the original drawings, and Bodum still makes the Chambord with the same painstaking care and knowledge. The ease of brewing and the delicious smell and taste of French-roasted dark coffee have remained unchanged.

Aside from being compact, 4-cup coffee makers also can be stylish. They are ideal for students staying in dormitories, as well as for families with three to four members. Depending on the design you choose, this type of coffee maker may look good on small kitchen counter tops or even on small bench tops. However, if you’re really serious about how your coffee tastes, then cheaper models are a big NO. Why? Simply because the coffee brewed from such second-rate machines usually tastes like plastic or a little metallic.

While it can be challenging to find out if the unit is durable or not or if the extra features will really work the way they should or as the manufacturer claims, you can still do something to avoid purchasing inferior units. It pays a lot to do a little research first on the brand and types of coffee makers that will fit your needs and your budget. In buying coffee makers, you get what you pay for. So if you want quality unit, you must be willing to spend a good amount of money for it.
